The Jenny Bag Purse Tutorial

The Jenny Bag
Tutorial
This pattern is a Copyright of Jana Nielson , Lola...again!!! 2008. It is intended for personal, non-commercial use. You may not make and sell items using this pattern. Thanks!

Download pattern here. Important I forgot to mark that the purse handle (one of the short sides) needs to be placed on a fold.

To make this purse I started with 2 different half yards of fabric, and 1 yard of fusible pellon. I had some of all of it left over...not sure of exact measurements at the moment.

Seam allowances 1/4 inch.

  1. Cut all pieces, and fuse pellon to all of them except: one of inner pocket, one of outer pocket, and one of outer pocket flap.

2. Sew outer pocket pieces together with right sides together. Leave one end open for turning.

3. Clip corners. Press to set stitches, and turn inside out. Press again.

4. Turn open ends in 1/4 inch and press.

5. Top stitch outer pocket at 1/4 inch. Repeat steps 1-5 with inner pocket.........

and do the same with pocket flap.

6. Fold one piece of the purse lining in half, and press in a crease.

7. Press a center crease on the inner pocket piece .

8. Match creases. Place pocket in the middle of purse body, and pin.

9. Edge stitch slong sides and bottom, leaving the top open. Stitch down center of pocket about 1/4 inch apart.

10. Repeat pocket application steps with front pocket, pocket flap, and front of purse body.

11. sew around 3 sides.

12. Place top of flap about 1/2 inch above the top of pocket.

13. Edge stitch across top of flap.

14. With right sides together, sew sides and bottom of purse.

15. sew down side, and stop at cut out square. Skip over the square, and stitch across the bottom, skip again, and up the other side.

16. match side seam, and bottom seam where square is cut out.

17. Sew at 1/4 inch

This makes the flat bottom for your purse.

18. Turn purse right side out and press seams flat.

19. Repeat steps 14-17 with purse lining. Leave lining inside out, and press seams flat.

20. place purse inside of lining, matching seams.

21. sew around top edge leaving a 3 inch openinc

22. Turn it all right side out.

23. Tuck lining inside. Press opening in 1/4 inch.

24. Edge stitch around top of purse.

25. Get handle pieces and press in half the long way.

26. Open flat, and press one side to center crease.

27. Press other side to center crease.

28. Fold each end over 1/4 inch and stitch down.

29. Fold handle in half and press again.

30. Edge stitch down both sides of both handles.

31. Place handles about one inch from side seam, and 1/2 inch down from the top of the bag.

32. Stitch handles on to front and back of bag.

32. Press bag and embelish however you would like!

How about sewing the handles on the front before you assemble and then you would tuck them in when you lined.

When you turn inside out they pop out.

That would create a cleaner look on top.

Love this tute! I made one and found it super easy to make and the instructions are well done! I think I am going to try to enlarge the pattern though cause it is a little too small for me as an everyday purse. :) You can find the pic of mine over on my blog. I am now a regular reader... you are so talented.
